Baking soda is extremely abrasive and we do not recommend using this remedy for acne. Using an abrasive ingredient like baking soda (or sugar) on inflamed acne will likely make the acne flare up worse.

Using baking soda as a mask with or without acne may scratch the surface of the skin causing scars to form or making the skin have a very rough texture. Baking soda can be used on dark spots by lightly dabbing baking soda diluted in water onto the dark spots. We recommend not using baking soda at all on your face because there are more effective dark spot remedies and creams that are very unlikely to damage the skin especially when being compared to baking soda.

However, this website is for educational purposes so we feel it is best to keep the information on using baking soda as a mask available.

Baking soda may help with acne because it exfoliates the skin removing dirt, oils, and dead skin cells.

All you need are about a tablespoon of baking soda, a bowl or small plate, and two teaspoons of water.

Test a small amount of baking soda and water on the back of your hand or arm before applying it. If it doesn’t burn then test a small amount on your face before applying.

If baking soda burns your skin do not use it. This remedy will sting a little, but if the it starts to burn your skin wash your face with warm water immediately. If the burn persists place a warm rag on your face to soothe your skin from the burn.

Exfoliate with baking soda.

Baking Soda Box

  • Place the baking soda in the bowl or on the small plate.
  • Mix the water with the baking soda until it turns into a thick paste.
  • Apply the baking soda paste gently rubbing in circular motions.
  • Avoid the eye area, eye brows, and keep a quarter inch away from the mouth.
  • Exfoliate for three to five minutes then rinse with warm water.
  • Pat dry your face.

Use baking soda at most twice a week if you have average skin or once a week if you have dry or sensitive skin. Using an exfoliate everyday will dry out your skin and cause irritation.

Do not use this after doing something that makes your skin sensitive like shaving or face peels.

  1. Thank you very much. This was a great help.

  2. can i use it 3 times a week ?

    • You can but it might end up drying your skin out. We recommend using it at most twice a week.

    • We no longer recommend using this remedy. Especially if you have moderate to severe acne it will likely make your breakouts worse. Baking soda can also damage the skin causing scars to form. Baking soda is too abrasive to be used on the delicate skin of the face.
