For some people with acne comes dark spots. For others dark spots can come from over exposure to the sun. Either way, they are tough to deal with. Especially if you have acne. The good news is that you can start using natural home remedies for acne to clear up your skin and fade dark spots at the same time.

Tips to prevent dark spots and acne. To protect your skin from the sun wear a hat to shade your face and neck when going outside for a prolonged period of time. Everyday wear sunscreen or a moisturizer with SPF 30 or higher that won’t clog pores. Avoid picking at popped pimples. Wait until a pimple has fully formed (when it’s about to burst on its own) before popping. Drinking at least eight, eight ounce glasses of fluid each day will also help with dark spots and acne.

For the following dark spot remedies we recommend to pick one moisturizer remedy and one acidic remedy for dark spots. Use the acidic remedy as described and then apply the moisturizer remedy. Stick with the remedies you pick for at least three months before ruling them out as a home remedy for dark spots and acne. Before applying a dark spot remedy wash your face with a plain gentle cleanser (one that does not contain salicylic acid).

Moisturizer home remedies for dark spots and acne.

The following are natural moisturizers that will help fade dark spots, and keep the skin from drying out. This helps with acne because dry skin can cause the body to overproduce oil to compensate for dry skin.

  • Apply extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) using a cotton swab. Apply enough for a slight glisten.
  • Use about a quarter cup of ground up unflavored oatmeal and three to four table spoons of water to make a moisturizer paste. Apply to the entire face then let the remedy sit for about a minute then rinse.

Moisturizer remedies can be applied daily. Apply EVOO at night because of the smell.

Acidic home remedies for dark spots and acne.

The following are acidic remedies for fading dark spots. Acidic remedies help with the over production of oil, kill acne causing bacteria and over time reduce inflammation and redness.

  • Grind or blend a fresh orange peel (do not use a peel that has turned yellow-brownish) and mix it with water to make a paste. Apply for fifteen to twenty minutes then rinse with water.
  • Grind or blend a quarter cup fresh green parsley (not greenish-brown) mixed in water to make a paste. Apply for fifteen to twenty minutes then rinse with warm water.
  • Fresh squeezed lemon juice on a cotton ball in circular motions for about a minute then rinse with warm water.
  • Mash up a few ripe clean strawberries up in a bowl with a fork and apply the juice to your face rubbing in circular motions for about a minute then rinse with warm water.
  • Add a quarter cup of ground oatmeal to strawberry juice for a strawberry oatmeal face mask.
  • Dissolve a few uncoated aspirin in two tablespoons of water. Add a teaspoon of aloe Vera or honey to make a salicylic acid aspirin mask. Apply and let dry for fifteen minutes then rinse with water.
  • Rinse with a cup of water, quarter cup of salt, and tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar.
  • Mix a tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar in a cup of water for a dark spot remedy drink.
  • Another home remedy for dark spots drink is green tea. Drink a lot of green tea to see results. Drink four to five cups of green tea for an acne and dark spot remedy.
  • Green tea also works topically. Use cooled green tea as a wash to treat dark spots and acne.

To avoid drying out your skin incorporate one of the acidic remedies into your skin care routine but do not apply it daily. If you have dry or sensitive skin use one topically once a week. If you have average to oily skin use one twice a week. In the winter use acidic remedies less often. Don’t forget to apply a moisturizer or one of the moisturizer remedies mentioned after using an acidic remedy to counter the drying effects. If you apply an acidic remedy in the morning use a moisturizer that doesn’t clog pores and contains SPF 30 or higher in it before going out. Acidic remedies make the skin sensitive to the sun so they are best applied at night.

Warm honey fades dark spots and treats acne. Heat up one to two tablespoons of honey in a microwave safe container for three to five seconds. Test it on the back of your hand to make sure it’s not too hot. Apply the honey to your face using a foundation brush your don’t care about getting messy or your fingers. Let the honey dry for ten minutes then rinse it off with warm water.

Diluted tea tree oil is one of the best home remedies for acne and it also fades dark spots. Mix fifteen drops of 100% pure tea tree oil into 1 fl oz (30 ml) of aloe vera gel to make a tea tree oil acne gel remedy. Apply half a teaspoon of the gel to your entire face avoiding the eye area. Wear protective goggles and gloves when handling tea tree oil undiluted. For more instructions on how to safely make and apply tea tree oil for dark spots click here.

Use pore strips, face peels, and exfoliates in moderation. Pore strips and face peels fade dark spots but should only be used once a week or at most three times a week. Do not use an exfoliate more than once a week if you have sensitive skin or twice a week if you have oily or average skin. Overusing harsh treatments or remedies can cause skin damage and make dark spots and acne worse. Do not use peels or exfoliates after using salicylic acid. Using peels or exfoliates in general are OK when done in moderation. But using them after applying salicylic acid can damage the skin and make dark spots, scars, and acne worse. Also avoid using abrasive ingredients such as baking soda and sugar on acne to avoid causing dark spots and scars.

  1. I have actually found this to not be true. I had really horrible acne and horrible dark scars. One summer I spent out in the sun swimming in the river and all my acne and scars went away…I got a little bit of a tan but I don’t very easy so I know it wasn’t the tan covering up the scars. My skin was plump, moist, and acne/scar free for once. Now I don’t have time to be out in the sun and I have horrible acne and scars again =(

    • I have a dark spot on my fore head, it’s so embarrassing and I want to get rid of it please give me some tips about home remedies I can use! It feels like I’ve tried everything

      • Try applying a thin layer of tea tree oil diluted in aloe vera gel, and you will be using two home remedies in one to treat your dark spot.

      • I have had severe acne for several years and have taken antibiotic injections, ointments, pills, and even switched to a vegetarian diet, all recommended by my dermatologist. Which remedy would be best suited for this god forsaken face? I have minimal scars, and uncountable dark spots.

    • @Natalia Most doctors recommend to get at least twenty minutes of direct sunlight a day anymore may be harmful. The irritation from the skin recovering from a sunburn also may cause acne. If you have really light skin 10 minutes may be all of the direct sunlight that your skin can handle a day. 20 minutes of direct sunlight a day can be helpful with treating acne especially body acne. Maybe you were experiencing less acne because you were less stressed. Staying active while having fun is a great way to reduce stress. Stress can create a hormone imbalance that may cause acne. A sedentary lifestyle can cause acne because of a variety of reasons including stress on the job. People that did not have acne before their mid to late twenties may begin to have acne because of a stressful work environment. Women in their mid to late twenties can also have an onset of severe acne because of the natural cycles their bodies go through. Following an acne routine will clear up most acne caused by a light to moderate amount of stress and most hormonal acne.

    • My oriental friend swears that cold water does wonders for your skins- he uses a bowel with warm water I splash her face a few times to open up pore then adds ice to the bowl. Then she splashes the cold water in her face to close them. No soap and she doesn’t rub face- just pat dries. Her skin is gorgous so I guess it works.

  2. I have a embarrsing dark spot on my fore head!! Will somebody please give me some tips on home remedies that I can use to get rid of it!

    • Apply diluted tea tree oil onto your entire face or to individual dark spots. Let the diluted tea tree oil dry for 5-10 minutes then apply a regular moisturizer. Apply the diluted tea tree oil again in the morning, once again let it try 5-10 minutes then use a regular moisturizer. Continue this process for as long as you like. The tea tree oil remedy is mentioned in the second paragraph up from the bottom of the post. Tea tree oil must be diluted before it used topically otherwise it can cause serious side effects so go to the link mentioned in the post for a way to dilute it.

  3. I don’t really have bad Acne, it’s just the Black Spots ance leaves behind. My skin is kind of Sensitive; so can someone give some advice on which sulotion would help me with my black spots? & it’s PROVEN TO WORK(:

    • A 10% alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) moisturizer can help fade dark spots. Since you have sensitive skin do not apply an AHA to your entire face. Instead try applying a thin layer over the affected areas. If no irritation or very little occurs then try applying it to your entire face. Since you have some acne this is the best option for you because the AHA will likely completely clear up your acne, but only if the AHA does not cause irritation.

Preventing acne is the best thing that you can do for dark spots in the first place. If you are using benzoyl peroxide only use an AHA if you have been applying benzoyl peroxide regularly for four weeks. Use an AHA moisturizer instead of a regular moisturizer three times a week. Because AHA makes the skin sensitive to the sun apply SPF 15 or higher before going out into the sun even for short periods of time. Continue to apply SPF 15 or higher before going out into the sun for a full week after not using an AHA anymore.

If an AHA turns out to be too harsh for your skin you can try using a 4% hydroquinone cream on the dark spots. There are many more options available for treating dark spots. AHA and hydroquinone are two proven methods that we recommend trying first. With or without treatment over time dark spots will fade on their own. Apply an SPF 15 or higher non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) moisturizer every day, and wear a hat when you will be out in the sun for prolonged periods of time.

As mentioned preventing acne in the first place is the best way to keep dark spots from showing up. Until your acne is cleared up make getting clear your priority above fading your dark spots. Follow the acne routine we have outlined to get clear using benzoyl peroxide or diluted tea tree oil. You can find links to our acne routine for acne in the right hand menu and menu bellow the title image at the top. There is also a link to the AHA treatment that we recommend at the bottom of the acne routine page.

  4. will aloe vera gel treat acne scars?

  5. Im going to try the strawberry and oatmeal mask. I want to know when i make this will it be safe to keep it in the refrigerator or keep it at room temp?

    • Do not make a batch of strawberry juice larger than you need to make the mask. 3-4 mashed up strawberries should be all that you need. The reason making a larger batch is not recommended is because strawberries do not keep for very long to begin with, and strawberry juice keeps for even less time.

Use up all of the strawberry juice you make for the mask in one sitting instead of storing it. Do not store strawberries at room temperature. Store the strawberries in a refrigerator crisper. Strawberries will keep for a longer period of time if you do not wash them before storing. Also, remove any unripe green or moldy strawberries to make the batch of strawberries keep for a longer period of time. Unripe green strawberries do not ripen once off the vine. So, it is better for maintaining the freshness of the rest of the strawberries in the batch if the unripe green ones are removed.

There are other options. For instance, if you have a juicer you can juice all of the strawberries (after rinsing them in water) at once, use enough to make a mask, and enjoy the rest of the strawberry juice in a drink. You can also enjoy the rest of the strawberries in hot oatmeal. It is best to eat the strawberries or use them in a mask within the first three days of purchasing them. Three days is about as long as strawberries will keep.

  6. i have a little bit of dark spots under my eyes and i want to get rid of them before they get bigger and darker!!!! Can anybody help?

    • The best way to keep dark spots from getting darker is to stay out of the sun. When you do go out into the sun for longer than 20 minutes wear a hat that will cover your face and apply a sunscreen or moisturiser that won’t clog your pores and contains SPF 15 or higher in it. Apply SPF 30 for days that you will be out in the sun for longer than an hour or two. For more information on getting rid of dark spots check out the post we made on the treatments and best remedies for dark spots by clicking here.

  9. Hi. I have had problems with acne since I was a teenager. I’m 40. I recently decided to stop using products such as Proactiv, and moved to a natural line by Alba. The cleanser is a gritty exfoliant with natural salicylic acid. In the transition to this natural product, my face was covered with little bumps for weeks (not postules like regular acne) resulting in lots of little dark marks. It’s been about a month and the little bumps are subsiding some, but think I need a little more time with this product. In the meantime, I’d like to heal those dark marks. I have organic ACV and would like to use that as a remedy to the dark spots, along with the oatmeal mask after, once a week. Should these two items replace the Alba toner and moisturizer when I use them? Thank you, appreciate this site, it’s very informative!
